At Fonroque, we are surrounded by the most wonderful medieval bastide towns and villages of the Perigord – perfect for a half-day visit. Wandering through the narrow streets, and sunny tree-lined avenues, there are endless opportunities to discover the colourful history and architecture of the area. Visit the Traditional Markets and sample the locally grown produce- there’s a market nearby on each day of the week.

The bastide town of Eymet is only 5 minutes drive away with its medieval Chateau and traditional market square, where a large market is held every Thursday and also a lively evening market in the summer months, which attracts people from miles around. Here there are restaurants and bars to suit all tastes & pockets and there is also canoeing, tennis, swimming and lots more- right on your doorstep!

During the summer months there are several Jazz & Music Festivals to enjoy, something that is very much part of the French culture. The Perigord is said to be ‘the land of a thousand and one Chateaux’ and wherever you turn there is a fascinating Medieval or Renaissance Chateau just waiting for you to visit – some are only 10 minutes away from the house!

The thriving city of Bergerac is only 20 kms north of Le Prince Noir – built on the banks of the river Dordogne , this lovely city is steeped in history, much of it springing from the endless vineyards that cloak the surrounding hills as far as the eye can see.

Bergerac also has a heritage of tobacco production, barrel-making and also the industry surrounding the gabares –the flat-bottomed boat that was used to float the wine barrels downriver to Bordeaux – all explained in the numerous museums there for you to visit. There’s a huge choice of restaurants here, tempting you to sample the culinary delights of the region, and the colourful markets held in the streets of Bergerac several days a week are testimony to the wealth of local produce on offer.

Travel East along the Dordogne valley towards Sarlat and Rocamadour and you encounter numerous beautiful chateaux which you can visit, many with guided tours. Also there’s a labrynth of amazing caves in the limestone cliffs along the banks of the river, a cool place to visit on a hot summer afternoon, and their fascinating archaeological history is often explained in both French & English.

Travel west and you reach the bustling city of Bordeaux , a magnet for the shopaholics – with all the hypermarkets you could wish for!

Travel North and you reach Perigueux the historical capital of the Dordogne , which dates back 2,000 years.
